LED sales made up just 3 percent of the residential lighting market last year, but many industry experts are projecting big growth for this energy-efficient alternative to the traditional light bulb.

The New York Times reports that prices for LEDs—short for light-emitting diodes—are falling steadily as manufacturers make improvements and retail giants like Lowe’s and Home Depot push them aggressively.

These big energy savers, however, are much more expensive than the standard light bulb.
