SPRINGFIELD — The onsite investigation into the four-alarm blaze that destroyed a Columbus Farmers Market building and the businesses inside last month concluded Friday, and now the owners are left to wait.

“They are doing a very comprehensive investigation,” said Matthew McCrink, attorney for the owners of the market – Charlie Pratt and John and Janice Ackerman.

Fire investigators have up to 30 days to determine the cause of the Nov. 18 blaze and issue a report. The outcome has implications for insurance claims pending for the 10 affected businesses, and the farmers market’s efforts to rebuild.

“We are already in the process of putting together plans to renovate,” said McCrink. “Bigger and better. It is one of those situations that when you have lemons you make lemonade.”

McCrink said the cause of the fire may have been electrical because Pratt, who was on scene when the fire started, said he saw sparking above one of the light fixtures in the building.
