Folk living opposite the new lamp on a seafront street complained it was like having car headlights shining into their homes.

So a mystery prankster scaled the 25ft tall post and attached a huge frilly pink shade.

Val Cole, 59, who lives opposite the light in Weymouth, Dorset, said: “The lampshade is brilliant, it’s a great laugh. People have been stopping and taking photographs of it.

“We used to have an uninterrupted view and now the light has spoiled that. The light comes directly into our room. It’s light pollution.”

Neighbour John Murphy, 53, said: “It’s like a car headlight. Even from a distance it lights up our garden. It’s like having a torch shone in your eyes.”

Boat builder Nick Hoare, 61, who lives opposite the light, said: “I like looking out to sea at night but I can’t do that anymore because the light is blinding.

“The lampshade hasn’t made much difference but it is a gesture of defiance.”

The man who put up the lampshade said he was a local resident but did not want to be identified.
