Michiana art center needs your help with repair

Two-hundred individually blown pieces of glass make up the Beacon Gold Chandelier.  The bumblebee yellow sculpture designed by Dale Chihuly welcomes visitors to the Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph, Michigan.

The chandelier used to light up the entry way at night, but not anymore.  The entire lighting fixture above the sculpture needs to be replaced.

Since the piece is so intricate, it comes at a pretty penny: $ 50,000 to be exact.  The sculpture has to be taken apart piece by piece, the lighting fixture has to be replaced, and then the sculpture has to be put back together.

Museum Executive Director Julia Gourley says fixing the lighting that showcases this piece isn’t just about the money, it’s about protecting something the community holds dear.  “Visitors 24 hours a day love seeing this sculpture lit in our entrance way.  When people are walking to the beach, they notice the Beacon Gold Chandelier and stop and say, ‘Wow, we’re in Southwest Michigan in this tiny, little community and they have this magnificent, world-renowned artist who’s work is here permanently placed at the Krasl Art Center.’” explained Gourley.
