San Jose Library director Jane Light retires after a stellar career

(photo courtesy San Jose Public Library) Jane Light speaks during the city of San Jose’s acceptance of the James C. Howland Award for Municipal Enrichment from the National League of Cities back in 2005. San José was the Gold Winner in the Population over 500,001 category for its collaboration with San José State University to create the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library. Light, who was instrumental in having this project come to fruition, is retiring at the end of March.

Imagine starting a new job and taking on enormous new projects your first day, including designing the first joint city-university library in the nation. Top that with the need to rebuild 15 small, outdated branch libraries, not to mention building four new branch libraries, and that’s been Jane Light’s job for the past 15 years.
